Reading
Reading is a very important part of our curriculum. There are many things you can do to help your child be a successful reader. Below are the parts of the reading curriculum that we will be focusing on throughout the year.
*Sight words
*Phonics
*Phonemic Awareness
*Vocabulary
*Comprehension**
In addition to the above items we will be focusing on how we can connect reading and writing, as well as developing listening and speaking skills.
One of the resources we will be using to focus on text comprehension, sight word recognition and fluency is Macmillan
You can access the stories at:
www.glencoe.com/ose
The class access code is : arico701
We will also use the SIPPS program. This program is a systematic approach to teaching phonics, phonemic awareness, and sight words. SIPPS will allow us to differentiate your child's reading program to meet their reading needs.
Sight Words
First Grade will be starting an incentive program to encourage the students to read their sight words and high frequency words accurately and quickly. For each list mastered the students will earn a part to a paper sundae. Later in the year, the students will enjoy the parts of the sundae they earned.
